I had a terrific weekend. Tegan & Sara in Worcester Saturday. An incredible hash Sunday, where I was put on my knees in a bar and had names shouted at me. And beer poured on my head. And cougars. And redheads. Also there random were phone calls from old friends.
There was a profound amount of attention paid to me this weekend. It feels good.

I play "So Far Away" by Carole King, and afterwards iTunes randomly plays "A Case of You" by Joni Mitchell. I swear, sometimes life isn't random enough.

So... a lot's been going on lately. I've started doing yoga, I played in an ultimate disc tournament, I climbed a 5.10 at the gym, and I've had some non-alcohol-related bad luck with stairs, to name a few.
And I could go into that, but for this post, I guess all I want to say is:
It always seems like the good ones are taken.

There's been a bunch of shit, but right now:
1. There's a lawsuit against me. For realsies.
2. The Volvo failed inspection, and I dropped a grand replacing the air filter, O2 sensor, and catalytic converter today. Goddamn.
3. Sera Cahoone has laryngitis.

On Sunday, I'm doing this thing called a "hash." From what I can tell, it will involve running around some part of Framingham, beer, the possibility of being sexually violated, and having my name changed to something dirty (right now, my hash name is Just Jack). I'm pretty nervous about it... there's a whole culture (vocabulary, history, traditions, etc...) behind it that is completely foreign to me. I know I can overcome it, heck, I've got the rock climbing thing down in two months. But jeeze, I just have no idea what to expect.

So I'm observing my sister breaking up with her long-distance boyfriend, and it's sort of interesting. I feel that I've been on the receiving end of exactly this sort of situation more than once, and I've got to say, it seems a lot easier on this side. In her mind, it's like they've already broken up, and she's trying to kind of break the news to him in a way that won't emotionally cripple him. He's done nothing wrong, and she cares for him a lot, but she's just grown apart from him. I find myself trying to help her, saying things like, "yeah, you kind of are stringing him along" or, "you're not doing him any favors by keeping this from him."
But this whole time, I keep thinking... is this how it was for me? Was it really that easy?
If you were a fan of Arrested Development, I wholeheartedly recommend It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. For example, watch this episode, in which the gang rationalizes serving underage kids at their bar, and everyone ends up going to prom. One reason it's better than AD: season 4 starts fall '08.

Wednesday night, my Razor's screen crapped out on me, so yesterday I went down and picked up an enV from Verizon. I now have a cellular telephone with a full QWERTY keyboard, and so far, I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm not doing email or anything, but txting is a breeze. And it makes me feel like I'm living in the future.
Rachel Poppe slept in my little sister's bed last night. I have seen her in, what, 15 months? I freaking love her.

I saw Jens Lekman on Friday at the Paradise. It was an amazing show, Jens is a hell of a performer. I fell in love a little bit with Marla Hansen, who played violin for him. ::swoon::
I took a 10 minute video on my camera of "A Postcard to Nina" and the story behind it, but I think the file is corrupted or something, because it won't load from my camera to my lappy. If I can figure it out, I'll upload it, but for the meantime, just trust me when I say that if you get the opportunity, see this man live. You won't be disappointed.
UPDATE:
I turn on Letterman, and what do I find? I guess March Madness is over. Finally.

Lately, I seem to have become the ambassador for all mankind. Specifically, I feel like women are asking me to interpret what other men are thinking.
Now, we've probably all done this. But unfortunately, without extensive study in psychology, I feel unqualified to answer many of these questions. Simply because I'm the same gender as those in question, doesn't mean I'm going to hit the nail on the head. All men think differently (as do all women). I hope to god these women aren't looking for definitive answers, but simply my perspective as a non-threatening nice guy.
My favorite one so far...
"Jack, there's this guy my friends are trying to set me up with, but his last email was odd. He told me he's just got out of a serious relationship, and can't handle jumping into a commitment right now. Why would he tell me that?"
"Because his head is completely fucked up right now."
"He said he'd like to get a couple of friendly beers... not 'as friends' but 'friendly.'"
"That is a terrible idea. After a serious relationship, a few beers will turn into several, and with the slightest prompting, he will completely unload on you. It will be the worst date ever."
I think I give good advice. But I really have no idea.

This afternoon I had a weird flashback...
It must have been spring of 2006, and Kat and I were walking through the quad, probably to her apartment. We were under a tree freshly blooming lavender in the spring, in bewteen the Schaffer Art Buliding and Bowne Hall, near the Moses sculpture. It was warm, late afternoon. And what's that? An artist, calling from the window...
"Hey! Young lovers!
You will remember this moment for the rest of your lives."
He was right.
Weird, the things that stay with you.

I went down to visit Sarah on Friday in Washington DC, and, apparently, help her move (I somehow missed that part when I made my plans). It was pretty great. I flew down Friday morning, met up with her at her work, and was there for her last day. Friday night was a night on the town, with a small soiree at a friend's house and then drinks and dancing at the Wonderland Ballroom. Bonus: we met up with people from high school (that I don't loathe)! More importantly: I didn't make any terrible decisions. Way to go.
Now, in the past however many months, I have been on the first, fourth, and now second-busiest rapid transit systems in the United States. How did the Metro stack up?
Pretty shabby. The place has no charm. When it was built, they had an emphasis on passenger safety, so it features things like large open areas so criminals can't hide and no platforms next to walls to fright graffiti. The vaulted ceilings are impressive, but every station looks the same. And ugly at that! It looks like the whole system was made in one day in the early '80s (which must have looked very modern when it was made in the mid '70s). Everything's made of concrete and drab brick, the lighting is eerie. And the cars! First of all, there's no room, with like four seats per row and NO OVERHEAD RAILS. I was aghast. And the interior was the worst color of puke I have ever seen.
Lastly, and this is a gripe I share with Boston, but the hours are simply not convenient. It doesn't open until 7 a.m. on weekends, and closes at midnight Sunday through Thursday. That's great... unless you're one of the people that actually have to work at times other than those listed. In which case, you're probably more likely to rely on public transportation. Idiots.

Thank God the writers are back! And I must say, Saturday Night Live was excellent this week. The always incredible Tina Fey put on a helluva show.
Some highlights:
Awesome monologue with my hero.
I saw No Country for Old Men right before, so, this was great.

Okay. Maybe I went a little overboard, 'cause completely changing my lifestyle over a bad weekend is a bit extreme. How about...
1. I just drink less 2. Just eat healthier 3. Get some therapy 4. How about just make all-around better decisions.
Deal? Deal.
